Guild Wars 2: The Year 2011 in Review

The year 2011 had a lot in store for Guild Wars 2 fans as it not only brought us from only four known professions up to all eight, we also had several big race weeks and a very busy convention season with playable demos and PvP. Here is our Guild Wars 2 Year 2011 in Review.

What better way to start off our retrospective of the year 2011 for Guild Wars 2 other than with ArenaNet's own Retrospective Video which was posted in early January. But instead of only one year, they actually covered a whole decade of ArenaNet history. The 15-minute long video is embedded below in case you have not seen it yet or just want to watch it again.

The rest of the month not only brought us the Kodan, one of the minor races of Tyria, but also gave us the Guardian as the fifth officially revealed class for Guild Wars 2. A large round-up of interviews and links about the heavy-armored magic-user can be found on the official blog.

February was a busy month on the blog, starting off with a combat update by Jon Peters in which he talked about healing skills, the downed state and much more. ArenaNet also brought us Human and Norn week both within the same month, marking the February as one of the busiest months for Guild Wars 2 in regards to blog updates outside of convention time.

Speaking of conventions: ArenaNet visited PAX East in March as the first of several major gaming conventions in 2011, and with them they brought a new playable Guild Wars 2 demo, revealing many new features as well as a new profession. The Thief was announced shortly before PAX East, shown at the convention for the first time, and received its own class page shortly after. Along with the new demo Guild Wars 2 fans also learned details about attributes, crafting and were able to play through the Norn starter experience for the first time.

In April we all fell for ArenaNet's elaborate April fool's prank, and the Skritt blog post and Charr week were only a small comfort for this. But ArenaNet quickly followed up with some Krait lore as well as a stunning view of the city of Lion's Arch in May.

We also got to see the 7th profession: The Engineer surprised a good portion of the fan base and ArenaNet answered a lot of questions in various articles and interviews. Of course we would now have to wait more than half a year for the final class, as they continued playing mind games with us about what it could be.

The summer of 2011 started with a focus on underwater combat and other amphibious things in June, as well as first details about dungeons in Guild Wars 2. In July ArenaNet invited a few lucky community members to their studios for an Open House event, and later that same month attended San Diago Comic-Con. All the Comic-Con coverage can be found in our forum thread, including lots of Engineer footage, underwater combat and more.

August was a big one, as we finally got to see the long-awaited Sylvari redesign as well as a big PvP reveal (1|2), Asura gameplay and much more in an all new demo for Gamescom and PAX Prime. All the footage and coverage can be found in our forum thread.

More about the Asura was revealed in a series of blog posts in September, after which it became a little quiet around Guild Wars 2. Even though there was still one more convention to attend in November, there was not as much coverage of the Korean G*Star for the western fans as for previous conventions. Still, the Guild Wars 2 team announced an updated character customization process and later on Jon Peters gave us a development update on the Engineer's tool belt, Ranger pet mechanics, and cross-profession combos.

Guild Wars 2 Mesmer
In December ArenaNet gave us one of the longest and most extensive Q&A sessions in the history of interviews. Following the official announcement of the Minstrel... err, Mesmer, several developers and members of the community team invaded Reddit and IRC to answer our questions until well into the night. We also learned that closed beta is now officially underway. You can find a round-up of Mesmer articles and interviews on the official blog. An update on achievements, Thief mechanics and combat animations marked the end of 2011.

Looking back, we can say that we now know much more about Guild Wars 2 than just one year ago. Four classes, underwater combat, crafting and PvP are just a few of the things we could read about on the blog or try out ourselves at one of the many conventions.

We want to thank ArenaNet for all their hard work and wish everybody in the Guild Wars 2 community a Happy New Year. We hope to see you again in 2012, which should bring us information on the last few remaining details like the guild system and World PvP... and maybe even a release date?
